Initial Accutane Nastyness (for lack of a better subj)
Question:
Hi I finally convinced my mom to get me on accutane. Finally. I hope it works for me. I have been battling cystic acne for 5 years with no success, and I am ready for accutane. Just one question. How long does the peeling, initial breaking out/redness last. I am going on vacation to the beach in december around xmas…60 some days away. Will I have to stay out of the sun? I haven’t gone to my derm yet, so he could probably answer these questions, but I would like to know from a first-hand experience. Thanks.
Response:
Hi, I have been on accutane for 7 weeks, my advice to you is to STAY OUT OF THE SUN. I mean, if the acne is of no bother to you, wait with the accutane till after the vacation, but if it was up to me, Id wait with the vacation. The sooner you take accutane and get it over with, the better. You could of course change to a paleolitic diet and take 15 grams of b5 a day and see your acne go away, but then again you have to live also. I feel tanning while on accutane is hazardous. Best wishes, Mads

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I think I’ll go ahead and wait until the beginning of January to get on it. My old derm. is out of service and I have to wait until NOVEMBER 20th to see a different one! Almost a month! Isn’t that ridiculous? I think so. Anyways… thanks again….

Shawna, depending on how bad your acne is,it could stay red for a while.I have bad acne and went onto accutane for 6 months and it helped with getting rid of the acne. The redness stays for a while, even months/years.I have scars on me and its been a about 15 years since I was on the medication and the scars are still to be seen. This is a long and painful recovery time form now on.Getting into the sun is one of the best natural resources for you skin.It has vitamin D in the rays and it helps with the healing of the skin. Best of luck. Brad – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hi > I finally convinced my mom to get me on accutane. Finally. I hope it > works for me. If you’re going to the beach I suggest you wait until after your trip to start the drug. You cannot lounge out in the sun on this drug.

The initial ugly stage lasts about 6 weeks. If you try to get a suntan while on Accutane, you will be burned so badly you will never want to sunbathe again. You are many times more susceptible to sunburn while on Accutane; even SPF30 isn’t enough. By the way, Accutane makes you tire easily; you’ll find that you can’t walk or play sports like you used to.

well excessive sun exposure is a NO NO during ALL times on accutane.
